The slippery challenge of flying soap 1 May 2013

Have you ever noticed that if you drop the soap while standing in the bath, under the right circumstances it can slide down the side, across the bottom, up the other side and fly out and land on the bathmat? It’s a fascinating science game for children of all ages: what combination of height, angle and position relative to the slopy end creates the right trajectory? Early attempts to replicate the experiment have only resulted in shattering my admittedly brittle olive oil soap into fragments that become prey to frictional drag. Of course the composition and shape – maybe even price – of the lump of soap, as well as the hardness of the water and the cleanness of the bath, must all be factors, although probably minor ones.

I can find no precedentss. I will update.
